Understanding Guard Dog Training

Many people bring a pet into their home because they want to feel more secure. Certainly, having a guard dog can provide a measure of security that is better than some alarm systems or other options. The mistake that some people make, however, is using unreliable methods of guard dog training.

Some think that they must teach their dog to be mean and/or angry in order for him to be an effective guard dog. In fact, the opposite is true. If the dog loves you and your family, he will be more inclined to protect you.

Also, a dog that is taught to be aggressive is more likely to be a dangerous dog, even toward you and your family members.

Proper guard dog training is of paramount importance. If you have no experience with dog training, the best option is to hire a professional. Another option is to buy a good book on how to properly train dogs.

When dogs are trained incorrectly, it is very difficult to retrain them properly. That is why it is so important to do it right the first time.

Hopefully, you are going to enlist the help of a professional dog trainer or study a book on how to do it yourself. Here are just a few tips to get you started in right direction.

Pick the Right Dog

Not all breeds of dogs lend themselves to being great guard dogs. Some are simply too laid back to care who is at the door. If you want a guard dog, be sure to research which breeds are best for this purpose.

Basic Obedience Training

In order to have successful guard dog training, your dog must first learn basic obedience. Many pet supply stores offer obedience classes as do many local chapters of the SPCA. Once the dog has mastered the basics, he’ll be ready to learn more specific commands and behaviors.

Encourage Natural Protective Instincts

Most dogs are going to bark when someone knocks on or approaches the door. Always say “good boy” or offer some other verbal praise as a way to reward this behavior. Usually, the only way this natural behavior will stop is if you teach the dog not to bark.

For this reason, it’s important not to scold a dog for barking. Instead, you will need to use some of the basic dog obedience methods in order to teach him to stop barking upon your command.

Trying to teach your dog to bite or attack is not a good idea unless you have professional dog training experience. Instead, give serious thought to leaving the more advanced guard dog training to the professionals.

They will work with both you and your dog to teach techniques that will not only allow your dog to serve as a reliable guard dog, but will also allow you to be able to control your dog in any environment.

A pet with proper guard dog training can give you peace of mind and a feeling of security. On the other hand, improper training can result in a dog that is both insecure and dangerous.

Make sure the training you choose is going to produce the desired results.
